Joining

Each square is added one at a time. You crochet all the way around each square before adding the next. Before you start on a square you need to decide where in the blanket it will go. Deciding what pattern to use on each side.
There are 3 types of joining patterns, depending on what each side touches.
The 1st pattern is for sides that will have the border on them.
The 2nd is for sides that will have another square added later.
And the 3rd is for sides that are being joined now.

Once you have decide which sides need which pattern its time to start. It's best to start on one of the free side (either with pattern 1 or 2). Start with the middle V-Stitch and work all the way round the square.

Pattern 1 (Preparing for the border shells)

1 ch. V-Stitch into corner sc. *5 ch. V-Stitch into next sc. Repeat from * until next V-Stitch in corner. 1 ch.

Pattern 2 (Preparing for next square to be joined)

1 ch. V-Stitch into corner sc.* 2 ch. 1 sc into middle of shell. 2 ch. V-Stitch into next sc. Repeat from * until next V-Stitch in corner. 1 ch.

Pattern 3 (Joining to another square that already has pattern 2)

How to do the join:
To start a joining stitch you must 1st remove the loop from the hook. Then pass the hook under the corresponding  stitch in a previous square and pick up the loop and pull it though. Now do the chain stitch.

Join 1 ch. Join V-Stitch (dc - join  ch - dc) into corner.* 1 ch. Join 1 ch. sc into middle of shell. 1 ch. Join 1 ch. Join V-Stitch. Repeat from * until next corner. Join 1 ch.

The Border

The border is very simple. In each V-Stitch do a 7 dc shell followed by an sc into the top of the previous (pink) shell. At the end of the joining row put the sc into the last joining stitch. And on the corners the sc goings into the 2ch space.

Once the border is complete, all that is left is to block the blanket. See HERE how I do it.

    1. Hello. I used KATIA FAMA yarn and a 4.0mm hook. I used about 400gr of yarn. I'm sorry to say I don't know how much of each colour.

The round 7 sc goes into the middle dc of the shell on round 5. Around the chains of round 6.
If you still don't understand what I mean please let me know.

  8. I'm confused about the joining. Do I go around all squares first and then join?

    1. Hi Joyce, sorry for the delay in replying.
      The joining is done as-you-go.
So the 1st square you go all the way around, without joining.
The next square go all the way around, joining 1 side the previous square.
You keep adding 1 square at a time either joining 1 or 2 sides as needed.
I hope this helps, if you are still having problem please let me know.

    1. The stitch is a bit different than the tradicional puff stitch. I played around with a few different ideas until I got the right look.
The reason for taking the last loop of the hook is so you can join the 1st and last stitch of the puff.
If you would like to send me your email I can try and send more photos. My email is hobbycrochetknitting@gmail.com
