I made this blanket for a pregnant friend. I thought a Teddy bear and hearts in white would be perfect for either a girl or boy. The only thing that would change is the colour of the ribbon and the corner hearts.
The pictures in this blanket are made using around-the-post treble stitches.
The charts I made for the pictures are for the smallest size need for each picture. To view and download the charts please follow these links:
All the around-the-post stitches go around the front of the posts from the right side.
If you are going to make it a different size here is how I calculated my starting chains. Before you start you need to decide:
1. How much padding you would like around the picture.
2. What type of border, if any, you would like.
Once you have decide it's time to calculate your starting chains:
(Border x 2) + (Padding x 2) + Chart
Also remember that you will have to change the number of padding rows and padding stitches in each pattern.
For my blanket I decide the have one large Teddy in the center, 4 Squares with hearts in the corners and 4 rectangles with hearts for the edges.
As I love the braided the join I decide to use it. So I wouldn't have to do a setup round I decide to add it to the squares as I made them.
I used KATIA FAMA yarn and a 4.5mm hook.
As I normally make my starting chain too tight I like to use a larger hook for the chain.
The Center Teddy
Has mesh border.
Make starting chain (69)
Row 1 (Border). Turn. Chain 4 (counts as 1 dc + 1 ch). dc into 5th chain. *ch 1, skip 1 and dc into next stitch. Repeat from * until end.
Rows 2 - 5 (Padding). Turn. Chain 4. Skip the previous chain 1 and dc into each stitch. Stop before just before the starting chain. Chain 1 and dc into the 3er chain.
Rows 6 - 36 (Teddy). Turn. Chain 4. Skip the previous chain 1 and dc into the next 12 stitches (Padding). Follow the chart for the next 41 stitches. dc into the next 12 stitches (Padding). Chain 1 and dc into the 3er chain.
Rows 37 - 40 (Padding). Repeat rows 2 - 5.
Row 41 (Border). Repeat row 1.
Cut and weave in the ends.
Corner Hearts (make 4)
Has mesh border.
Make starting chain (41)
Row 1 (Border). Turn. Chain 4 (counts as 1 dc + 1 ch). dc into 5th chain. *ch 1, skip 1 and dc into next stitch. Repeat from * until end.
Rows 2 - 3 (Padding). Turn. Chain 4. Skip the previous chain 1 and dc into each stitch. Stop before just before the starting chain. Chain 1 and dc into the 3er chain.
Rows 4 - 23 (Heart). Turn. Chain 4. Skip the previous chain 1 and dc into the next 6 stitches (Padding). Follow the chart for the next 41 stitches. dc into the next 6 stitches (Padding). Chain 1 and dc into the 3er chain.
Rows 24 - 25 (Padding). Repeat rows 2 - 3.
Row 26 (Border). Repeat row 1.
Cut and weave in the ends.
Top and Bottom (make 2)
No border.
Make starting chain (65)
Row 1 (Padding). Turn. Chain 3. Dc into 4th chain. dc into each chain.
Row 2 (Padding). Turn. Chain 3. Dc into each stitch including the top of chain 3.
Rows 3 - 22 (Heart). Turn. Chain 3. 19 dc (Padding). Follow chart. 20 dc (Padding).
Rows 23 - 24 (Padding). Turn. Chain 3. Dc into each stitch including the top of chain 3.
Cut and weave in the ends.
Side Panels (make 2)
No border.
Make starting chain (37)
Row 1 (Padding). Turn. Chain 3. Dc into 4th chain. dc into each chain.
Rows 2 - 9 (Padding). Turn. Chain 3. Dc into each stitch including the top of chain 3.
Rows 10 - 30 (Heart). Turn. Chain 3. 5 dc (Padding). Follow chart. 6 dc (Padding).
Rows 31 - 41 (Padding). Turn. Chain 3. Dc into each stitch including the top of chain 3.
Cut and weave in the ends.
Braided Join
Join by first taking the loop off the hook and passing though the hole on the other panel. Place the loop back on the hook and do the join stitch (in this case a chain stitch).
On the top and bottom of the panels place the dc into every other stitch. As long as the starting chains are an odd number it will fit perfectly.
On the sides of the panels place the dc stitches where the rows meet.
Each corner is dc, 3 ch, dc. Each chain should join to a different panel. If there is no panel to join to just do a chain stitch.
On the outside edges do a mesh (1 dc, 1 ch). I prefer to start each round on an outside edges.

The Edge
At the moment the blanket has a mesh edging. This is where the ribbon will go.
Rnd 1: dc all the way around (one in each dc and one in each ch). For the corners, between the two dc's do: 3dc 1ch 3dc.
Rnd 2: 6dc into the same stitch. *skip 2 stitches and sc into next stitch. skip 2 stitches and 6dc into next stitch. repeat from *. In the corners do 9dc. If the shells don't line up with the corners all you need to do is only skip 1 stitch in a few places. No one will notice. And if they do it only makes it unique!!
All that is left is to block and then to thread the ribbon though the mesh edge.
To see how I block my blankets click HERE.
To hold the ribbon on place I decide to use 3 small hearts. The pattern for which can be found HERE. I used the tails for the hearts to sew them and the ribbon in place. On the last corner I made a bow and used normal sewing thread to sew it in place.

such a lovely blanket...thank you much...i especially admire your design with the close stitches, making it quite snuggly...again, so lovely and thank you for your generosity...take care...sally
ReplyDeleteLovely blanket but directions look way too confusing for me and I used to teach crochet.
ReplyDeleteIf you are referring to the maths at the beginning of each square, this is just to show how I calculated the starting chain. I put it in so that if anyone decides to make the squares a different size or with a different join they can see how to adjust their chain. But I did also include the length of my chain.
DeleteIf you are referring to the pattern its self I'm sorry if it's confusing. I have only just started writing patterns. So If you let me know where the confusion is I'll be grateful and I'll do my best to change it!
is the blanket for beginners very lovely blanket instructions alittle hard
DeleteHi. The pattern is all double crochet and around-the-post trebles.
DeleteAs soon as I get the chance I'll try and rewrite the instructions.
I have changed instructions. I hope it makes it easier to understand.
DeleteHi thank you for this beautiful pattern! Please tell me how much yarn you used? Thank you in advance
ReplyDeleteHi thank you for this beautiful pattern! Please tell me how much yarn you used? Thank you in advance
ReplyDeleteHi, I used about 400 grams (4 skeins) of Katia Fama.
DeleteThank you for the beautiful blanket when you do ch1 skip a stitch then dc into the next stitch does that count as the 1st dc of 15? Or do you do the dc then do another one as the 1st of 15? It's a little unclear? Thanks in advance sarah

ReplyDeleteHi. I'm not sure which part of the pattern you are talking about. If you could tell me the row number and if it's a heart or the teddy that would make it easier. Thank you.
DeleteSo sweet! Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI love this blanket but am still a novice. Do you have a tutorial video to help me crotchet this blanket?
ReplyDeleteThank you
I'm sorry to say I don't have any videos.
DeleteSorry I can't help you with videos. But if I can help in another way, Please let me know.
when you talk about padding in your pattern what exactly do you mean by padding?
ReplyDeletewhen you talk about padding in your pattern what exactly does padding mean?
ReplyDeleteHi. By padding I mean the stitches or rows between the picture (Teddy / Heart) and the edge. You can add more or less padding to make the blanket bigger or smaller. I hope this helps.
Deletethank you this helps a lot!!
Deletedo you have more written instructions for this pattern to go along with the graph as I am finding it difficult to get the number of stitches to come out right once I start the graph...It is such a lovely blanket and I'm new to doing graphs that are in the middle of a bigger area..thank you
ReplyDeleteHi. I'm sorry to say that I don't have the numbers written down. When I made it I wrote the numbers directly on the graft. I also only count from the edge on the 1st row and on the 1st row of the arms. The rest of the rows I just count in or out from the stitches on the previous row. This means I only count small numbers. I hope this helps.
DeleteOkay got it thanks
DeletePlease clarify , do you mean double crochet or are they trebles?
ReplyDeleteSorry do you mean double crochet or are they trebles?
ReplyDeleteIn US terms the background is done with double crochet and the pictures with around-the-post trebles.
DeleteI hope this helps!

ReplyDeleteI have just updated the links. They should work now.
